“With his artworks, Tom Roest transmits the alchemy he experiences during his inner journeys.”

Introduction

Tom Roest (1996) is a Dutch artist with an antique dealer background. With his work, Roest transmits the alchemy he experiences during his inner journeys. His intuitive style is combined with the reuse of old materials, which he discovers on his search in the world of antiques. Tom reuses old paper that he finds in antique frames, he turns them over to create a new canvas, a new beginning. His intention is to stimulate the viewer’s curiosity and spirituality.

Spiritualist art

Spiritualism plays a large role in Tom Roest’s life, and thus in his artworks. There are 3 main lines in Roest his work; inner journey, intuition and intention. As Roest sees them as separate lines in his work, they are often connected. We will go down the 3 lines to get a clearer understanding.

Inner journey

These journeys for Tom are mainly based on plant medicine, but can also be achieved in dreams, meditation and other similar mind-altering activities. Roest strongly felt to create art in some of his journeys, it felt like a new wave, a new artistic generation. The inner journey inspired works are mostly based on image, but can also be based on feelings or emotions. If it lacks the view, Tom combines it with intention to transfer his journey onto his canvas.

Intuition

Tom works only through intuition, but he mostly needs to rediscover what he did, after he did it. Why do we do what we do? That fascinating question is great to ask yourself because mostly we do not do ‘just something’. It’s based on something we’ve seen, felt, heard or even deeper than that. Roest believes in spirits that are helping us, or past lives, for example. How do we get ideas? Do we create them, or are they gifted? In his art you can recognize his intuitive style, the shapes and frames he uses are carefully selected and found by him between countless different objects in the world of antiques.

Intention

The main intention for Tom is to stimulate the viewer’s curiosity and spirituality. But in his lines of work he uses intention to transmit an emotion, a prayer or an energy. While creating these mediumistic artworks, Tom opens his heart and let the intention flow through and beyond him.
